Editor’s #117 / In the countryside. For us, for them, for everyone

We enjoy old houses, traditional architecture (and an entire culture) ; we rightfully despair at the accelerated destruction of this heritage ; and, in a cultural continuity of several hundred years old cliches, there is, tucked in some corner of our minds, the absurd wish to preserve an unspoiled way of life, which we may contemplate with great satisfaction.

Editor's #116: Participationism avant la lettre: looking back to past experience

Participationism is a historiographical construct inspired by mid 1960s’ anthropology and social theories. About twenty years before theorizing, by 1945, Hassan Fathy was testing it within New Gourna project in Luxor, Egypt.

The work of Dutch office mei is smart and complex. While their buildings immediately attract attention, they also spring from a deep reflection on programming and identity, urban life and the need of communities
Metaphorical greenery shapes the experimental facade of this garage. A project about public  character for an equipment, architectural joy and hi-tech manufacturing.

Taking the totalitarian city for a walk

An integrated platform with Google Maps, to help overlap the scaled plan of the 80s totalitarian operation “the Victory of Socialism” over a city you pick  (jumping from megalopolises to idyllic towns is truly something). A small bulldozer helps walk the unwanted guest anywhere on the territory of the selected town.

Back to chaos

Text: Stefan Ghenciulescu

Two recent events leave us with a bitter taste regarding the situation and the perspectives of the Romanian urban realm. First, we have a new and sinister law for urbanism. (...)  Besides that, we have the authorities finally gave their blessing to the removal (actually, the destruction) of the protected Matache Market hall.

Izhar Gafni, an Israeli expert in the design of automated mass production lines discovered after years of research an opportunity to increase the structural performance of corrugated banal cardboard (usually used only in packaging) to make bicycles. Based on a mixture of organic materials (protected by international patents) combined with rubber reinforcement from recycled car tires, cardboard acquired an almost miraculous resistance to water and fire.

Designing smart affordable offices as a response to recent global challenges: The Hub Bucharest offers an integrated model of a breaking social collaboration in our country. It is a network of co-working offices founded in London, in 2005, and now successfully extended worldwide. In Romania, there are initiatives based on workspace rentals. However, The Hub provides a long-range integrated concept and three basic principles: a creative space, smart communication and professional content.

MIT SENSEable City Lab & BMW Guggenheim Lab la Berlin

Intro: Cosmin Caciuc / Texts & projects: MIT SENSEable City Lab

The smart monitoring of public space is part of the cognitive mapping culture of urban space based on the research of Kevin Lynch, a town-planner from the ‘50-‘60s (essential for the academic tradition of MIT). Since now we have much more sophisticated environment data survey, interpretation and communication means, cartography can be developed in the much more complex context of urban information. Electronic sensors have become an extension of the observer, allowing for new insights into the way people come to appropriate or not the space they use. The permanent collection of data represents a first step in the more serious process of rethinking the city and taking decisions in order to transform public space.

Urban integration of tramline in Zaragoza
Text: Iñaki Alday, Margarita Jover / Photos: José Hevia, Aldayjover

Since the 1960s, as in other Spanish cities, a transformation occurred in the realm of traffic space in Zaragoza. Previously, there was reduced circulation and little separation between foot traffic and motor traffic. Trams were surviving with few lines, vehicles and passengers until the industrialization of the late 1950s associated progress with cars and grand asphalt avenues. In Zaragoza, the central walkway of the Paseo de la Independencia accommodated 12 lanes in a hommage to modernity that was applauded by the press at the time. By the 1970s practically all tram services in Spain had ceased to exist, Zaragoza’s being one of the last to disappear.

ArcelorMittal Orbit. Or how to produce an urban icon
Text : Stefan Ghenciulescu / Photos: © ArcelorMittal

The main ingredients of this project are a mythical and ambitious metropolis – London; one event – the Olympic Games; a dynamic and ambitious mayor  - Boris Johnson; a very powerful corporation – ArcelorMittal and its Chair – Lakshmi Mital; a cooperation between an exceptional artist (and always appealing to a broad audience) – Anish Kapoor and a visionary engineer – Cecil Balmond.

If the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao also works as a museum, and the “Bird’s Nest” in Beijing truly hosts competitions, then Orbit has no means but itself. It is a work of art – the tallest sculpture in the UK, and the only function is to offer platforms (quite large, that’s true) to view the panorama.

Top Floor

article published in the 108th issue of Zeppelin magazine / October, 2012

Stefan Tuchila climbed over 80 buildings and took several thousand photographs of Bucharest: another kind of urban research, a methodical and spectacular urban mapping. And a support for the recollection of a city that is constantly reinventing itself.

The rapid evolution of Bucharest has long ceased to surprise its inhabitants anymore. The recent financial crisis has managed to soften the effusion of change, but not rare are the moments when visiting a neighbourhood that is not on our usual path, we discover dumb with surprise how much it has changed. And the effect is nowhere more impressive than when you are at height, from atop.

Light partions and the insertion of new organs shape the strategy for the recovery of the Fabra & Coats Factory as a centre for creative industries. IF – Premiile ”Eurobike Award” 2011

If the old Romanian saying "In fair weather prepare for foul" still makes sense today (translated literally from Romanian: “in summer prepare your sledge and in winter your cart”), the idea of an article on bicycles in the season of those nightmarish winter tires looks quite right. The more so as it deals with some particular bikes that make ordinary ones appear as if they “go by foot”: it is all about the winners of Eurobike Awards competition organized by IF - International Forum Design.

Energy efficient or “green” mortgages represent a potential for Romania to take the lead in the region by introducing an innovative real estate financial tool for reducing energy costs, improving energy security and increasing adoption of better construction technology, materials and techniques.

The introduction of such a financial product is very timely in the context of the current European regulations on buildings that make energy efficient ratings compulsory for all new and existing buildings.

Exhibition at the National Museum of Contemporary Art
Bucharest, 14.05.2011 – 31.07.2011
Curator: Ruxandra Balaci

This article was published in zeppelin magazin number 95.

Dust poisoning, dreams and stereotypes cut out off the media, everyday experience among Berceni blocks of flats, some contagious humour, destabilized framing, light-headed stylistic collages, mixed cultural allusions and colour hallucinations are part of the aesthetic ammunition of artist Nicolae Comanescu whose paintings propose unusual trips among actual urban deeds and collective imaginary.

The Courtyard of the Four Evangelists

A cemetery extension located on an island between Venice and Murano seeks to redefine some of the original qualities of this place, while offering a greater sense of the lagoon context.

Text: David Chipperfield Architects

This article was published in zeppelin magazine number 95.

The San Michele Cemetery, Venice’s principal cemetery, is located on an island between Venice and Murano. This historic site has been in continuous development for over four hundred years but has recently evolved to a point where the romantic image of its outer face is in contrast to its interior municipal character. In order to address this obvious imbalance, the proposal seeks to redefine some of the cemetery’s original physical qualities.

A roof for the centre of urban activity

Built in a public-private partnership, the new market in Celje was designed as a generator of life in the city centre able to resuscitate the surrounding area.

Text: Arhitektura Krusec

This article was published in zeppelin magazine number 97.

The town market is situated in the heart of the city. Ever since it was formed, in the middle of the previous century, the market has represented the centre of urban activity in the city. In contrast to the old market, the new development is designed as an extrovert urban area, a kind of covered city square which is inextricably linked to the surrounding urban space.

Developed in one of the famous satellite-dormitory-cities of Bucharest, quiet yet lacking any character – besides the one given by some expensive and anachronic self-referential buildings, appearing from behind some giant fences – this project was from the very beginning marked by a critical-ironical detachment from the context.

Screening: My Beautiful Dacia
Directed by: Julio Soto & Stefan Constantinescu

My Beautiful Dacia is a light hearted and humoristic portrayal of the evolution of Romania from Communism to Capitalism, seen through the eyes of its most emblematic symbol, the Dacia automobile. "In our film, we will follow different generations of Romanians - from the old nostalgic to the young entrepreneurs - showing the present transformation of Romanian society. The connecting point between the different stories is always the Dacia car: first, a symbol of the ambitions of Communist technology and now a reflection of the new global economy. The Oslo Opera House, built with RUUKKI structures and metal based solutions

The Norwegian Government proposed one of the most impressive design themes in the past few years, worth more than 500 million EUR. Oslo Opera House was intended not only to become the most important cultural and architectural milestone in Norway, but also to bring a new approach to a classic theme – complete creative freedom in designing a building that has always been strictly dedicated to opera and ballet.

The result was astonishing, due to the fresh design solution and the small “surprises” reserved for the visitors, such as the possibility to have a picnic lunch on the roof of the building. The novelty was also the location itself, as the Opera is located in the city’s harbour. A very audacious technical solution allowed for half of the building to be erected on the surface of the harbour landfill and the other half on water.

The metallic structure and components needed for the project were supplied by Ruukki, one of the most experienced producer of metal based solutions in Europe. Ruukki was involved in every step of the project. Alongside the architects who designed the Alexandria Library in 2002 – Craig Dykers and  Kjetil Trædal Thorsen, Snohetta bureau of architecture

Transparent city: on limits and dwelling in bucharest
Author: Stefan Ghenciulescu

Edited by: Zeppelin
Ion Mincu University Publishing House in Bucharest
No of pages: 124
ISBN: 978-973-1884-19-6

The more Bucharest architectural and urban patrimony is destroyed, the more publications dedicated to the city appear. It is an accountable phenomenon that pertains not only to a nostalgic evocation and exorcisation of the trauma caused by the totalitarian operations of the eighties but also to authors’ wish to bring arguments (explicitly or not) on the fact that Bucharest has had a valuable and determining patrimony in terms of our identity, a patrimony that deserves protection and promotion.

Expozitia MAGIC BLOCKS,

Fragments of the Earth

Monetariei)
Perioada: 2–30 octombrie 2009

“Arhitectura” launches a new format and a new graphic concept

In 1999, a very young team set up again the “Arhitectura” magazine. In 2002, the magazine went for an international format, and meanwhile it has become one of the most important architecture magazines in the region. The standard that the contents have reached forces us to rethink the format and graphic design, so that they are at the same level.

In the new format, information is reorganized and more easily available. But we do not give up the quality and thorough presentation of the topics specific to the magazine. The contents are divided into three main sections, each with its own clear identity, and we have introduced short summaries inside most articles. These changes allow for easy “surfing” and several reading levels – from a quick browse, focusing on essential information, to in-depth reading. The magazine becomes “friendlier” to all types of readers – from architects, designers and architecture/design students to the representatives of other artistic professions, building professionals and cultural audience.

The three sections are the following

MAGIC BLOCKS
Scenarios for the collective housing from the socialist period in Bucharest

When it comes to contemporary urban development Eastern European countries lend themselves to be regarded as a testing ground: their striving to catch up with Western Europe is matched by rapid, often brutal changes. This exhibition takes Bucharest as a sample city to analyse the evolution socialist collective housing estates underwent during the past twenty years. It explores ideas, articulates principles and brings forth case studies to help model a strategy for the urban rehabilitation of such areas. It speaks of the frantic individualism that replaced the imposed collectivism of yesteryears, of the public - private interplay, of social and economic mechanisms, of architecture and (above all) public space. The project suggests an alternative approach, based on community activation, minimal resources, and on a „positive takeover” of current tendencies.

AURELIA MIHAI
THE SOCIAL BEING OF TRUTH
03.06 - 30.08.2009

Muzeul National de Arta Contemporana, Palatul Parlamentului, Calea 13 Septembrie

curator: Oana Tanase

Selectia urmareste sa faca vizibil un set de mecanisme si strategii cu care jongleaza Aurelia Mihai: de la investigarea domeniului privat la cea a unor clivaje si anacronisme sociale (“This is the Hour”, 2002, “Von Herzen”, 2007, si “From Time to Time”, 2003); de la camera fixa ce inregistreaza discontinuitatile consumate in ordinea cotidianului – “The Day. (It Begins with the Cock and Ends with the Dogs)”, 2005 – la ambivalenta dansanta a dervish-ului din “In the Open Air” (2007); de la estetica pseudo-documentarul ui stiintific speculata de “Valley of the Dreamers” (2004) – in care sunt “descoperite” nicidecum antichitatile Egiptului, ci egiptomania Las Vegas-ului si butaforia ce i-a slujit lui Cecil B. DeMille pentru “Ten Commandments” in 1923 – la perspectiva calda, participativa ce face loc in “...si cel moldovean” (2008) unor destine despartite de Prut si de istorie, pentru a comenta legi, masuri, obiceiuri si tranzactii considerate relevante pentru intelegerea relatiei dintre arta si societate.

Islanda - aproape 66 grade nord
22 iunie - 22 iulie, Bucuresti, Ceainaria Carturesti, Arthur Verona nr.13-15

Text: Constantin Goagea. Translation: Dana Radler
Photo: Mihaela Poenaru

Recently, MNAC (NMCA-National Museum of Contemporary Art) and the Royal Netherlands Embassy organised a debate about the public space; Justin Baroncea presented the case of public spaces in Barcelona at zeppelin; I talked about this under the Revival of the Fittest conferences organised by Hydrasociety. Briefly, there are many actions dedicated to this topic; some of them not only by our team, in which we talk increasingly often about what and how it should be done and I had the feeling that this is for everybody something quite obvious. Despite that, I realise there are confusions for specialists as well, be they architects or great urban planners. Since the value of the public space and how this should be designed, created, developed is not clear within our own profession either. Perhaps that many of the things to come up in these pages are or will be signed by architects, artists or designers.
Meanwhile, pavements keep vanishing, parks are more or less undersized, too busy in the weekends, people vandalize or consume trivially, and act vulgarly.
There is no normal and democratic society without a public space, and the interventions in it should only be effective not only in terms of political visibility, but to stimulate really the community values, the tolerance, and the communication. There is nowhere in the legislation a social or civilian right defined as follows: the public space, but its presence is defining for our social, emotional and cultural health etc. Town halls advance slowly, the programmes are incoherent or confusing, and the little they do often turn to get opposite results to good intentions. We are certain that those behind such actions, developments and achievements have no intention to stir laughs, but are well-meant to get a better looking city.
It happens then that our places get dreadful, hilarious, involuntarily comical, sometimes insanely grotesque, and instead of us reacting, replying, commenting or amending, we stop taking those into consideration and start living in an absurd world, while becoming insensitive. We turn brutal, intolerant, vulgar and irresponsible.
Given all this, we think it is the time to make up a compact critial response and explain clearly, show the arguments of what bothers us, of what does not work. We want to support them, to provide our opinions,  reactions as experts. Perhaps the lack of such reactions is a sign of weakness on our behalf too.
Public money could be used better, be it a better idea instead of a bad one, at the same cost, or a strategic plan at a lower budget. Why the fate of such investments could not be better than the mere signposting (decorative and fencing), a rather polluting electoral upgrading. If we need to spend time, invest energy and resources, why should this not count for real and long term? As long as we do not talk about this, such issues will keep coming and turn increasingly regularly with all their negative impact.
That is why we suggest such a topic in which we investigate what really happens around us, not the grand theories, not mere attractive images, and spectacular projects, but a clear and critical research. We do not want to get desperate and immobile, or perplexed and confused even if we float in a sea of vast and minor topics. No matter how insignificant our efforts, corrections and improvements, it is still important to do it. We will thus talk about the space, and especially, the non-public space for Romanians, with the intention to stir your thoughts and reactions.

27.03 - 16.04.2009

The Polish artist Wojciech Wilczyk (b.1961, Krakow), member of the Polish Photograph Artists Union, takes pictures as of 1988. During the exhibition, called "Life after life", can be seen 40 photographs, as well as a video. The photographs catch bodies of cars (after being used) changed into advertising panels, flowerbeds and other design elements. The presentation of such items not exactly esthetic revolutionizes the quotidian, shocks through the absurdity of their presence in the reality space.

The exhibition curator is Adam Mazur (Warsow Zamek Ujazdowski Center of Contemporary Art).

The exhibition will be opened for the public until 16.04.2009.

The international design competition Electrolux Design Lab 2009 invites undergraduate and graduate industrial design students from all over Romania to submit their innovative home appliance ideas for the next 90 years.

The brief for the competition's 7th edition is to create thoughtfully-designed home appliances that will shape how people prepare and store food, wash clothes and do dishes in the next nine decades.

The design ideas should address key consumer insights: being adaptive to time and space, provide learning and allow for individualization.

A limited number of finalists will be invited to participate in the final event in London on September 24th, 2009. They will be able to present their entries to an international jury of high-level designers and experts.

The jury will review the entries based on intuitive design, innovation and consumer insight.

KLUDIstudio, blvd libertatii nr. 10

Invitat: Justin Baroncea | mic discurs stiintific si anecdotic despre paraziti inteligenti in arhitectura

Orice casa are povestea ei.

ANUNT PRELUNGIRE TERMEN PREDARE ETAPA 1 BAB 08

Stimati colegi

Dl. Riichi Miyake este professor la Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University si între multe altele a participat si la proiectul de restaurare al Bisericii Sf. Nicolae de la Balinesti.

"Jukebox City. Bucharest today. Histories and architecture" Exhibition
will take place between 18 October and 18 November 2007 at Met-room Architecture Gallery in Barcelona. It comprises a selection of Romanian pieces of architecture between 1990 and 2007. They are to be featured less on architects or offices, but rather on types and contexts of their achievements. Therefore, for the relation with the memory of the city we have tendencies to recover the interbellum modernism, an enthusiastic undertaking of contemporary international patterns, and also efforts to reinterpret the specificity of the city. Two separate sections on professional or spontaneous changes brought to that part of the city built in the Socialist era and the evolution of city periphery. Finally, a major section presents elements of architectural and urban history - features to provide an identity for the urban evolution of Bucharest compared to Western metropolises. The title - Jukebox City - is an allusion to an incredible collection (not so much known outside) of works and urban fragments of the modern age, turning Bucharest into a city-witness of the last 150 years of European history: what was preserved from a pre-modern city as a background to all later changes, the original adaptation of French patterns, the most massive modernist heritage on the continent, the effort to re-synchronize features of the 60s and the 70s, perhaps the most delirious totalitarian operation in the world, and, finally, a frantic explosion of energies in the years of transition and the ways to reinvent a city.

Authos of Jukebox City Exhibition: Constanting Goagea, Stefan Ghenciulescu, Cosmina Goagea, Justin Baroncea, Felix Arranz.

Organisers: the Union of Architects in Romania, "Architecture" Review
Partners: the Order of Architects in Romania, the Ministry of Cultures and Cults, Met-room Gallery - Barcelona, Centro de Enlace - Barcelona

Project carried out as part of Promocult programme

Expozitia "Polonia. Icoanele arhitecturii"

Remix!
Romanian pavillion at the 2006 Venice Biennale

Fragments, energies, involvement
During the totalitarian period, in Romania there was only a team of 22 million players forced to play against it self. The team had an absolute leader, arbitrary rules and individual surviving and resistance strategies.
Now, 17 years since the brutal collapse of the regime, it seems that there are 22 million teams, each playing by its own rules. The game runs out of control, and we witness a fascinating, yet worrying collision of various energies. A prison-like territory has not changed into one of negotiations, but in a no man's land patched with an infinity of private and closed spaces. Urbanity has become a disjointed archipelago of places.
